Painter, scholar, scientist and a master of many other subjects, Leonardo da Vinci’s description “The human foot is a masterpiece of engineering and a work of art.” – holds true even today but we often neglect this very important part of our body hidden away as it is for the most part in coverings of socks and shoes that are often ill-fitted. Stuck at the disadvantaged end of our body, we forget the hard work our feet do for us and often land up with foot problems like corns, calluses, warts, toenail fungal infections, ingrown toenails, blisters and cracked feet among others.

Foot problems need a specialist’s attention and such specific concerns are treated by Podiatrists or Chiropodists who are foot care specialists trained extensively in the diagnosis and management of foot related issues.

Some Common Foot Problems treated at a Foot Clinic

Corns and Calluses – They are areas of thickened skin on the feet caused due to pressure or friction and though they are not painful generally, they do cause varying degrees of discomfort while wearing shoes or walking.
Ingrown Toenails Treatment – It is a common condition in which the corner or side of a nail grows into the soft flesh of the surrounding skin leading to redness, pain, swelling and sometimes infection.
Toe Nail Fungus – It is the one of the most common diseases of the nails often following fungal infection of the feet. People using public pools, gyms and those who sweat a lot or wear closed, tight shoes for long periods in humid weather conditions are prone to this. Another very common cause of toenail fungus is through wet salon pedicures in seemingly hygienic conditions.
Warts or Verrucae – They are painful, hard warts appearing on the soles of the feet, mainly on the heels and the balls of the feet. They are caused by a virus and are fairly common amongst young people.
Plantar Fasciitis – It is the commonest condition causing severe heel pain. It is caused due to the inflammation of a thick band of tissue at the bottom of the foot – the plantar fascia. Athletes, runners and people who stand for long periods of time are prone to this condition.
Palmoplantar keratoderma – It is characterized by abnormal and varying degrees of thickening of the palms and the soles of the feet. Trauma and friction lead to frequent blisters and calluses leading to pain that makes walking difficult. It is a genetic condition.
Heel Fissures(Cracked Heels) – They are a condition arising from excessively dry skin on the feet(xerosis) and made worse by callus formation around the edges of the heels. Though not serious, if left untreated, the fissures may bleed and make standing and walking painful.
There are many more to the list but as 8 out of 10 people would have some foot problem or the other, a little bit of tender loving care for those hard working feet is a must. And even if you are one of those lucky few to have no issues, an occasional visit for a medical pedicure would do no harm as prevention is better than cure.
