Pigmentation & Tone Correction

Dark patches on the skin have a way of becoming the dominant feature of the face. They are not always dramatic; sometimes it is a diffuse unevenness that makes the skin look more tired than it is. Sometimes it is a distinct patch that appeared after pregnancy and has stayed. Either way, the thing most people have in common when they arrive at AAYNA with a pigmentation concern is that they have tried remedies, over-the-counter and otherwise, that have produced limited results.

This is usually because pigmentation is not one thing. Melasma, sun spots, post-inflammatory marks, and vascular pigmentation each sit at different depths in the skin and respond to different treatments. Applying the same approach to all of them is the most common reason the results are disappointing. The starting point at AAYNA is an accurate assessment of what type of pigmentation is present, where it sits in the skin, and what has drives it.

Types of Pigmentation

Melasma

One of the more challenging conditions to treat because its internal hormonal driver continues to stimulate melanin production even as active surface treatments clear away the pigment. Because sun exposure consistently worsens it, a comprehensive clinical approach that manages this recurring cycle is necessary for lasting improvement.

Sunspots and Age Spots

These accumulate over years of unprotected exposure and tend to deepen with age. Because they are structurally distinct from melasma, they typically respond exceptionally well to focused laser toning.

Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH)

This is extremely common in Indian skin, which naturally has a higher baseline melanin level and a greater tendency to mark after any inflammation. Thankfully, PIH typically clears more readily than structural pigmentation when targeted with the right balance of peels and lasers.

Uneven Skin Tone

A more diffuse form of pigmentation: patches that are darker or lighter than the surrounding skin, creating an overall unevenness rather than distinct spots. Caused by a combination of sun exposure, pollution, hormonal change, and age. Responds well to a combination of treatments that address both the surface and the dermal layer.

Loss of Radiance

The skin loses its natural luminosity with accumulated sun damage, dehydration, and the slowing of the renewal cycle. This is not a pigmentation condition in the strict sense, but it presents similarly and is treated with overlapping technologies: HydraFacial, Laser Genesis, and chemical peels that accelerate the skin’s renewal and clear the surface.

FAQs

Is melasma permanent?

Melasma is a chronic condition driven by internal hormonal factors, meaning it can recur if that internal trigger stays active. However, it is entirely manageable. By combining clinical laser toning, targeted peels, and strict daily sun protection, we can significantly fade the patches and keep the condition beautifully controlled over the long term.

What is the best treatment for dark spots on Indian skin?

Indian skin requires a non-ablative and highly precise approach. Aggressive, ablative treatments carry a major risk of triggering worse post-inflammatory pigmentation (PIH) in darker skin tones. At AAYNA, our absolute preferred treatments are MedLite Laser Toning, Hollywood Laser Toning, and medical-grade chemical peels—all of which are proven safe and effective across the entire spectrum of Indian skin tones.

How many sessions does pigmentation treatment require?

Every skin profile is unique, but general timelines include:

  • Sun spots: 2 to 3 sessions usually clear them.
  • Surface PIH: 3 to 4 sessions of laser toning typically yield significant improvement.
  • Melasma: Usually requires a full course of 6 to 8 sessions followed by a customized maintenance plan.

Note: Exact timelines are always finalized during your initial personal consultation after we map the precise depth of your pigment.

Can pigmentation return after treatment?

Sun-induced spots can absolutely return if you skip sun protection, and melasma requires active maintenance due to its hormonal nature. On the other hand, post-inflammatory pigmentation (PIH) typically does not return to the same spot unless that specific area suffers a fresh injury or bout of acne.

Is sunscreen necessary after laser toning?

Unambiguously, yes. Any treatment that shatters or targets melanin makes your skin temporarily more vulnerable to UV rays. Going unprotected out in the sun will prompt your cells to produce new pigment rapidly to defend themselves. Applying an SPF 50 daily and reapplying it every 2 to 3 hours is our mandatory, non-negotiable aftercare standard.

Can hyperpigmentation be treated during pregnancy?

We do not perform medical chemical peels or laser treatments during pregnancy out of an abundance of caution. The safest and most effective approach is to strictly manage your skin using diligent sun protection while pregnant, and then schedule your targeted clinical treatments with us during the postpartum period.
